Carly Rae Jepsen - Kiss [Album Review]
I listened to one song from this album last night and I actually liked it so I was tempted to download the whole album and here’s my verdict: I don’t hate it.
I felt the need to write a long post about this because I know I like making of fun of some female pop artists and the music they release and how fucking basic they are but that’s not to say I do not really enjoy listening to their fun songs from time to time. What I like about this album though, is its so fucking unpretentious. It completely knows what it is and doesn’t try to be something bigger than it is. There are no songs about feminism, loving yourself, plotting revenge on an ex-boyfriend or feeling like a fucking plastic bag. No hypersexualized tracks with thinly veiled allusions to cunnilingus and fellatio, its just good ‘ol fun, bubblegum pop record with no emotional depth really. I’m also glad there are no tired collaboration with a basic rapper that would add nothing substantial to a track.
However, it is far from being a perfect funpop teenybopper record. I still think there are fillers and songs that just make me cringe. Then there are songs that would make me roll my eyes, smile and just put my face on my palm because it tugged that guilty-pleasure string in my ears like that track Sweetie (cmon, the title alone…) or when she used the word “destiny” in More Than A Memory. I hope the album became a little bit more ambitious though with the production because tbh that’s the highlight of this album, the infectious catchy beats where Carly Rae Jepsen’s voice plays as a perfect accessory to a well-produced clubworthy banger like the track Tonight I’m Getting Over You where Carly sounds like a celestial dancehall nymph reminiscent of Sia, Robyn or gahd, even Jocelyn Enriquez.
So yeah, all in all its a good fun pop record. I dare say, one of the better albums off its genre (Basic Pop is a genre to me now) and yep, dare I say, even better than Teenage Dream actually. I can’t promise you won’t skip any track but I’m sure there’s at least one or two songs there that will be stuck in your head, after all this came from the singer of that song we unfortunately had stuck in our head for quite a while (and dont deny it!)
Album Highlights:
More Than A Memory
Tonight I’m Getting Over You
Wrong Feels So Right (deluxe edition track)
